Learning Math through Word Problems

As a student, learning math can sometimes be challenging, but it can also be fun and exciting. Word problems are an excellent way to make math more interesting and applicable in our daily lives. In this lesson plan, we will learn how to solve word problems related to length using division.

Introduction to Word Problem

Start the lesson by introducing the topic of length and division. You can show a ribbon of 20 cm to the class and ask the students to identify how many equal pieces can be cut from it. By doing so, you can introduce the concept of dividing the total length with the required number to find the length of each piece.

Hands-on Activity for Word Problems

After introducing the concept of division, you can distribute paper strips to each student and ask them to measure its length with the help of a ruler. Next, you can ask them to cut the paper strip into three equal parts and measure each part’s length. This hands-on activity will help students to understand the concept of dividing the total length with the required number.

Using the CUBES Method for Word Problems

To solve word problems, it is essential to follow a specific method. In this lesson, we will use the CUBES method. CUBES stands for Circle, Underline, Box, Eliminate, and Solve.

For instance, if you have a word problem that states, “The total length of wire is 30 cm. If it is cut into six equal parts, what is the length of each part?”

Step 1: Circle all the numbers – in this case, it is 30 and 6.

Step 2: Underline the question to be solved – in this case, it is “what is the length of each part?”

Step 3: Box key words – the keyword here is “each.”

Step 4: Eliminate extra information – we can cross out “total length of wire.”

Step 5: Solve – write the number equation and divide the numbers to find the length of each part.

30 ÷ 6 = 5

Therefore, the length of each part is 5 cm.

Conclusion to Word Problems

In conclusion, word problems can be an engaging way to learn math. In this lesson plan, we learned how to solve word problems related to length using division. We also learned the CUBES method for solving word problems. By using real-life examples and hands-on activities, students can understand and apply math concepts effectively.
